What is the best time to visit Mount Rainier?

Mid-July through August for hiking and wildflowers. The NPS gives summer highs in the 60s and 70s and names July and August as the driest months.

That window is short because the park gets so much snow. Paradise averages about 637 inches a year, per the NPS, and the NPS says snow stays on the ground at 5,000 to 8,000 ft through mid-July. Once it melts, the meadows bloom quickly. Average temperatures at Paradise run from 33°F in January to 64°F in July, so even in summer, bring a warm layer.

When are the wildflowers best at Mount Rainier?

From mid-July into August. The NPS says many flowers bloom by mid-July in most years, and by the first of August the meadows should be very impressive.

The exact timing moves with the snow. After a big winter, snow can stay in the meadows well into July. The Paradise meadows are the classic place to see them, from the paved paths near the visitor center to the Skyline Trail. Please stay on the trails: the park asks visitors to protect the meadows. On the east side, the Naches Peak Loop near Chinook Pass is another favourite; the Washington Trails Association calls late July to early August wildflower heaven there.

When does the snow melt on Mount Rainier trails?

Mostly by mid to late July. The NPS says snow stays at 5,000 to 8,000 ft through mid-July, which covers Paradise and most popular trails.

In June and early July, expect snow on the upper parts of trails around Paradise and Sunrise, and bring shoes with good grip. The NPS warns that early-season hiking on the Burroughs Mountain trail may be hazardous because of steep snow-covered slopes. The 93-mile Wonderland Trail around the mountain is typically mostly snow-free from mid-July to October, per the NPS. Stevens Canyon Road, which leads to Reflection Lakes, is normally open to vehicles from late June to September.

When are Sunrise and the seasonal roads open?

In a normal year Sunrise Road opens in late June or early July and closes in late September or early October. In 2026 it is closed to private vehicles for the rest of the season.

The Grand Park 2 fire, started by lightning on August 7, 2026, closed the Sunrise and White River areas. White River Road reopened on September 5, but Sunrise and Sunrise Road remain open only to walkers and cyclists for the rest of 2026, and the Mount Fremont trail is closed. The NPS road status page lists these scheduled closures for the season:

• Paradise Valley Road: scheduled to close October 19.
• Ricksecker Point Road: scheduled to close October 20.
• Stevens Canyon Road: scheduled to close October 26.
• White River Road: scheduled to close October 26.

The road from the Nisqually Entrance to Longmire stays open all year, except in extreme weather.

Can you visit Paradise in winter?

Yes. In winter the NPS says vehicle access is available only from the Nisqually Entrance, and the road from Longmire to Paradise is plowed, but the gate at Longmire closes nightly.

Each day the park decides whether the gate at Longmire opens, based on conditions, so plan for delays. Every vehicle must carry tire chains from November 1 to May 1. The Henry M. Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise is open all year, with limited winter hours. And the snow is serious: Paradise averages about 637 inches a year, per the NPS, and it once held the world record for measured snowfall in a single year, 1,122 inches in 1971-72.

Winter tours remove the chains and the driving. The 14-person guided day lists snowshoes and crampons from October to June. The all-inclusive small-group tour lists snowshoes in winter if needed and requires waterproof boots from November to May (rental is available). The in-depth small-group tour runs a winter route from November to April, with a longer Longmire Museum visit and a scenic stroll on the Wonderland Trail.

What months can you climb Mount Rainier?

Most summit climbs happen in spring and early summer, per the NPS. Summer climbing registration runs May 22 to September 30.

A summit climb is not a hike. You need a climbing permit and the annual climbing fee to be on a glacier or above about 10,000 ft, and technical glacier-travel rope skills. The NPS puts a climb at three to four days, and the park authorizes three guide services: Alpine Ascents International, International Mountain Guides and RMI Expeditions. Do you need a timed entry reservation for Mount Rainier?

Not in 2026. The NPS confirmed there is no timed-entry reservation for any part of the park this year; you only need an entrance pass.

Timed entry ran in two recent summers. In 2024 it covered the Paradise corridor from May 24 to September 2 and the Sunrise corridor from July 3 to September 2. In 2025 it covered only the Sunrise corridor, because of construction on the Paradise side. For 2026 the park manages parking instead, and advises arriving before 7 AM or after 4 PM and visiting on weekdays. On a summer weekend, the Paradise lots can fill early.

Is September or October a good time to hike Mount Rainier?

September is a good, quieter month for hiking at Paradise. October is shorter and colder, with seasonal roads scheduled to close during the month.

Services wind down in autumn: in 2026 the Paradise Inn closed for the season on September 28, and the Paradise Camp Deli is open through October 12. The National Park Inn at Longmire is generally open all year. Some tour listings switch to winter gear from October, and the flagship listing notes that May and October can bring limited access, with some roads closed.
